Super Random, But 'The Penthouse' Star Eugene Actually Has Sinigang Mix In Her Home Pantry
Eugene became a household name in the Philippines when she starred in the Koreanovela Save The Last Dance For Me as Sandy, which aired in ABS-CBN in 2005. Since then, Pinoys have been supporting her and they were even more thrilled when she appeared in the noontime show, Wowowee! Eugene fans, here's another ~Pinoy trivia~ about her that you'll love: She has packets of Sinigang Sa Sampalok mix in her refrigerator!
In 2019, the Hallyu star was a guest in Please Take Care Of My Fridge, a Korean cooking show where "Korea's top chefs battle off to create the best gourmet dishes from leftovers", according to Viki. Here, they have 15 minutes to whip up a winning dish using random ingredients from someone's fridge.
The hosts were surprised when packets of the tamarind soup base were shown on the camera and they asked what sinigang is. Eugene hilariously explained that it's a dish from the Philippines and shared: "If you eat it with your eyes closed, it's similar to kimchi jigae." LOL!
ICYDK, kimchi jigae is a kind of Korean stew that's on the sour side, since it uses kimchi. The more fermented the pickled vegetables are, the more sour and flavorful it will be. This is why Eugene compared sinigang to kimchi jigae because it has that tart yet savory flavor! She also mentioned that people from Guam, the country where she lived, eat the Filipino dish, too.
Aside from sinigang mix, Eugene also stores annatto seeds in her fridge, or what we all know in the PH as atsuete. We use this in our meat dishes like afritada and menudo to give it a deep red color, while she makes red rice using it. Nakakatuwa siya, 'no?
Meanwhile, we can't stop laughing when we saw a tweet that said: "Buti pa yung sinigang powder nakatira sa bahay ni Eugene." Hahaha! You can watch the clip of Eugene's guesting right here:
