There's A 'Kakanin' Place Called Mayor Biko And Their 'Biko' Looks Legit

As Pinoys, puns and wordplays are a big part of our culture. A biko place called Mayor Biko? It was bound to happen, and lucky for us, it exists and we're here for it.

Mayor Biko sells the Filipino rice dessert on Instagram. They serve it with a thick layer of syrupy latik on top, and it comes in two bilao sizes.

According to Preview.ph, there’s an 11-inch bilao good for two to three people for P450, and a 16-inch serving good for eight people for P650.

Preview.ph also states that Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto himself has tried their biko. They quote the owners of Mayor Biko as saying, "Huling dalawang linggo ay kami’y bumisita sa kanyang opisina at nagdala ng Biko para sa kanya at kanyang staff."

Although their first Instagram post is dated February 2021, Mayor Biko owners pointed out that they've been around for a while, and the name was a coincidence. “Nagkataon pong sumakto ang aming pangalan kay Ginoong Mayor Vico. Nung nanalo na po si Mayor tsaka lang po kami pinagkakaguluhan dahil nga po kapangalan ni Mayor.”

Here's some interesting trivia on biko and Mayor Vico. It's been said that biko was unofficially banned in Pasig during the election campaign period in 2019. Mayor Vico has tweeted to a user that a vendor seemed afraid to sell biko and was selling it in secret.

The keyword is "unofficially banned," since the Pasig City information officer at the time said there was no official ban on selling biko.
