Everything You Need To Know About The New Cruella De Vil Remake

Disney's upcoming movie Cruella, a prequel to the epic 101 Dalmatians, has a release date, and it looks like it's going to be brilliant. Emma Stone stars as a punky version of the film's villain, Cruella de Vil, and judging by the trailer and pics, she's bringing a whole new twist to the role.

Here's everything you need to know about the new movie, from its release date, to the plot, and who's been cast...

Is there a trailer for Cruella yet?

The first trailer for Cruella dropped on 17 February and gives the first glimpse at her backstory, and what made her the way she is in 101 Dalmatians. Emma Stone looks brilliant, while the costumes, hair, and makeup are second to none.

On 14 March, Disney then released another trailer, and it's safe to say we're excited. The film's official synopsis reads, "An all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinema's most notoriousand notoriously fashionablevillains, the legendary Cruella de Vil."

"Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets."

"One day, Estella's flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella."

Disney has since released the second trailer for the project which gives a few more details about the actual storyline, as well as some stunning costumes.

What's the plot of Cruella?

The prequel to 101 Dalmatians, Cruella will rewind time and explore exactly how iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil came to despise dalmatians so much. The original films (both the 1961 animated version and the 1996 remake) depict Cruella as a rich, evil old lady determined to dog-nap dalmatian puppies to turn into fur coats. But what went wrong in Cruella de Vil's life to make her develop such a hatred for the breed?

The origin story is set in 1980s London, and will track the life of a young Cruella alongside her sidekicks, Jasper and Horace. Already can't wait.

Who stars in the Cruella remake?

The cast for Cruella is top-notch, as usual for Disney. Emma Stone stars as the main woman herself, Cruella de Vil, with Emma Thompson confirmed to play the Baroness (whatever that role will entail). Starring as Cruella's criminal henchmen, Jasper and Horace, is Joel Fry (who featured alongside Lily James in Yesterday) and Paul Walter Hauser (who starred in a few episodes of Game Of Thrones as Hizdahr zo Loraq).

Disney unveiled the first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil at the 2019 D23 expo, Disney's major biennial fan event held in Anaheim, California. Cruella has been punked up for the film, relevant for the 1980s era it's set in. Stone can be seen in the poster clad in leather with the character's famous black and white hair, holding on to three dalmatians inside a derelict building.

Emma Stone as you know her is totally unrecognizable, but Cruella is still as hauntingly terrifying as you remembered her from your childhood days of watching 101 Dalmatians.

In February 2021, they then released the second look, along with a release date:

When will Cruella be released?

In February 2021, Disney confirmed the release date for Cruella on Disney as May 2021 (see above.)

They'd previously revealed it would come on May 28, 2021, though we don't know if that is still the case or if things have moved due to coronavirus or production delays. The movie was filmed in London in 2019.
