15 *Adorable* Facts You Probably Didn't Know About 'Flipped'
20120 rom-com Flipped is now available on Netflix (thank goodness), and we are all reminiscing about our childhood first loves! The movie is told from the point of view of Bryce and Juli: Juli has had a crush on Bryce FOR YEARS, but he finds everything she does annoying. After a series of unfortunate events, Juli decides that Bryce is not worth the effort anymore, and everything is suddenly *flipped* because that's when Bryce realizes how important Juli is to him!
In 2020, the cast had a mini-reunion with Flipped author Wendelin Van Draanen to celebrate the film's tenth year anniversary, where Madeline Carroll (Juli), Callan McAuliffe (Bryce), Stefanie Scott (Dana,) and Israel Broussard (Garrett) talked about filming the movie. They *spilled* sooo many new facts about the movie!
Here are 15 things you probably didn't know about Flipped:
1. Callan's hair went through *a lot* while filming Flipped. "On the movie, we had to dye it like seven times in one day or something like that, because they wanted a particular shade of blonde...We had to go through six different shades of blonde, one of which was green. My hair never really recovered, I don't think," he joked. "It's been dead for a decade."
2. Callan says he was more afraid of Madeline than Flipped director Rob Reiner, because she had more acting experience than he did and he was so awkward, especially during the audition!
3. Wendelin told Rob Reiner that it was okay if he changed the ending of the story by having a kissing scene between Bryce and Juli, but thankfully Rob Reiner decided to retain the original ending from the book where Bryce and Juli just look into each other's eyes.
4. Remember Juli's eggs that she gave Bryce and he threw away as soon as she was out of sight? Madeline got to keep those (plastic) egg props from the movie and the newspaper where we see Juli Baker on a tree, which were given to her by the movie's propmaster.
5. Callan actually played with the antique tin toys inside Bryce Loski's room in between takes. He shares: "I definitely played with them. I was very much like a prop fiddler...I would always play with everything in the room, that was also including like the food whenever we would have an eating scene. I would just be constantly eating the food, even though we weren't rolling, I would just eat it. They would have to keep replacing it."
6. Flipped was actually Israel and Callan's first-ever full-length film.
7. Callan says it was "a bloody summer camp" and they all agree because, during filming, they would all just play and have fun with each other! The cast members were actually the same ages as their characters in the film (11 to 13 years old).
8. Stefanie initially auditioned for the role of Juli!
9. There were actually two extras from the film who "fell in love" on set. Madeline shared: "He wrote her like a wrong poem or whatever and asked her to be his girlfriend."
10. Madeline's bike scene, after Bryce tried to kiss Juli, took a looot of takes: "He [Rob Reiner] had me do that like a hundred times, because he wanted it particular like that."
11. Madeline's most awkward scene was Juli and Bryce's almost-kiss scene. "That almost-kiss scene was probably my memorable because I was like, passing out all day."
12. Callan says people are always telling him that he had a *glow-down* after playing Bryce. "I guess I was cursed by the immortalized image of the makeup department's hard work," he joked. "I get all the comments telling me I've had a glow-down in the last decade. Always comparing me to my beautifully-coiffed blonde hair, lovely clothes."
13. During one premiere of the movie, Madeline, Callan, Israel, and Stefanie took hundreds of photos with kids and signed copies of the Flipped books for fans! Wendelin shared: "We had you sign hundreds of books that we then gave away to people who were attending the evening show...and then your parents went out and got Burger King for you. You took pictures with all these people, and then afterward, we were all in the concession stand, and this is how I remember you: your patience and your kindness and your work ethic were just remarkable for people your age."
14. The Flipped book has been published in sooo many countries, including China, Russia, Poland, and South Korea!
15. Lastly, they know how much Filipinos love Flipped. "The Philippines love Flipped, they're crazy for Flipped," Wendelin shared. Callan exclaimed, "Boy, do they!" You can watch the full reunion here.
