Covid-19 Surge Continues With Over 9,000 Cases Recorded A Day Before ECQ Starts Again

The Department of Health announced a total of 9,475 new COVID-19 cases this Sunday, March 28, a day before Metro Manila and several neighboring provinces shift to Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). This is the third day in a row that the country has recorded more than 9,000 fresh cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 105,568. 

The Philippines has recorded a total of 721,892 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in 2020. Of this, 13,170 resulted in death.

The constant surge of fresh cases is what pushed the government to put Metro Manila and provinces in what is called the 'NCR Plus' bubble (Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, and Bulacan) under ECQ from March 29 until April 4. 

Health authorities also attributed vaccine complacency and the rise of new variants to the surge of cases.

Here's what you can expect from the upcoming ECQ, as stated by Reportr.World: 

• Essential construction works and public transportation are allowed at truncated capacity to be determined by the Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works and Highways.
• The curfew will be longer in the NCR Plus area from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Shopping malls will be open, limited to essentials such as food and medicine.
• Restaurants are allowed to operate for take-out and deliveries.
• Travel pass will not be required.
• Convenience stores, public markets are open
• Mass gatherings are prohibited, including religious ones.
• Those below 18 and over 65 are prohibited from leaving their homes.
• Online classes will continue.
