Pinays Share The 10 *Best* Movies They Watched This Year

2020 passed by sooo fast! Personally, when it comes to movies, I loved Emma, the latest adaptation of Jane Austen's novel of the same name. It was colorful, witty, and funnysomething you wouldn't normally expect from historical films. Anya Taylor-Joy, who also starred in The Queen's Gambit this year, absolutely SHONE in the film.

But enough about me! Here's what girls from our Cosmo Community named as the ~best~ movies they watched this year:

1. The Platform

The plot: "Inside a vertical prison system, inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, The Platform is a twisted social allegory about mankind at its darkest and hungriest."

Why it's THE BEST: "Grabe hindi ko siya malagay into words. *Badly put*, the people at the top don't care about the people at the bottom. The ones at the top take whatever they want, leaving almost nothing for the ones below them. Familiar? LOL."Klariz

2. The Call

The plot: "When a lonely woman receives a phone call from a young girl promising to save her late father, she thinks she's finally found some hope. The catch? The girl is calling from twenty years in the past."

Why it's THE BEST: "Hindi ako normally affected sa mga ganitong movie pero 'di ako pinatulog [nito]...Medyo na-praning ako sa landline namin."Trina

2. Parasite

The plot: "Ki Taek's family of four is close, but fully unemployed, with a bleak future ahead of them. The son Ki Woo is recommended by his friend, a student at a prestigious university, for a well-paid tutoring job, spawning hopes of a regular income. Carrying the expectations of all his family, Ki Woo heads to the Park family home for an interview. Arriving at the house of Mr. Park, the owner of a global IT firm, Ki Woo meets Yeon Kyo, the beautiful young lady of the house. But following this first meeting between the two families, an unstoppable string of mishaps lies in wait."

Why it's THE BEST: "Not only did it live up to the hype, but it was beyond magnificent from the cinematography to the storyline. It still haunts me to this day."Jane

3. A Taxi Driver

The plot: "In this powerful true story set in 1980, a down-on-his-luck taxi driver from Seoul is hired by a foreign journalist who wants to go to the town of Gwangju for the day. They arrive to find a city under siege by the military government, with the citizens, led by a determined group of college students, rising up to demand freedom. What began as an easy fare becomes a life-or-death struggle in the midst of the Gwangju Uprising, a critical event in modern South Korea."

Why it's THE BEST: "This film is based on a true story and it made me tear up for real. I think Filipino viewers would be able to relate as well."Rie

4. Palm Springs

The plot: "When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other."

Why it's THE BEST: "Leave it to Andy Samberg to produce and star in a rom-com that is different from anything you would expect (in the best way possible). Andy Siara writes a really wonderful screenplay about time-loops which explores the themes of mortality (or rather immortality), ethics, and of course a much too literal idea of 'eternal love.'"Michelle

5. Little Women

The plot: "Determined to make her own way in the 1860s, a writer looks back at the tough yet tender times spent with her three spirited sisters and a close chum." (Via Netflix)

Why it's THE BEST: "The story may be set in the 19th century but its message is timeless: You do what feels right for you because there is no single right way to be a woman. And you've got to love that."Cosmo Honest Review

6. Knives Out

The plot: "When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death."

Why it's THE BEST: "I love the twists. Some are kinda predictable but because of the great storytelling, it still had me on the edge of my seat. I love the political undertones too!"Steph

7. Cleaners

The plot: "Cleaners is a coming-of-age anthology film about high school classroom cleaners for the school year 2007-2008. Set in the backdrop of a Catholic school in Tuguegarao City, the characters deal with different pressures of being clean, proper, and pure while slowly discovering that the world is dirty and superficial to begin with. The different stories range from the taboo of shitting in school to navigating local political dynasties."

Why it's THE BEST: "Cleaners managed to convey the rough and nostalgic edges of high school with their stop-motion black and white cinematography style while leaving the blast of color on their main characters. It's also a bit eerie...it almost plays like a documentary because the acting was natural."Ela
