Just So You Know, These Foods May Cause Acne

While acne may develop because of our environment and genetics, lifestyle habits like diets can trigger breakouts. Here we break down the foods that may cause pimples. Please note that these are just general guidelines, and there are not enough studies that link a certain food to acne. It's always best to talk to your doctor about acne treatments.

The Foods That May Cause Acne

Acne is considered to be an inflammatory disease. Foods that may cause inflammation are said to cause breakouts. Here are the most common foods that contain the said triggers.

Refined Sugars + flours

Candies, desserts, white bread, and white rice are all laden with sugar and starch. These foods provide no nutritional value. These are also considered as high glycemic index foods because these spike insulin levels in the body. The sudden rise in insulin accelerates skin cells growth which boosts sebum production.

Dairy

There are some studies that have linked the consumption of cow's milk may cause acne. While these didn't conclude if dairy products were a direct cause, there was a correlation found between those who drank cow's milk and the severity of their acne.

Soy Products

Before you load your grocery cart with soy milk as a dairy substitute, we'd like to warn you about it. Acne may appear when our bodies experience a hormonal imbalance. Soy is high in estrogen and may cause issues when consumed in large amounts.

Fast Food

Shocker, LOL. Fast food is known to be high in sodium, sugars, and trans fats. Granted that these meals are filling and give you a quick energy boost, these don't have nutritional value. We understand that it's a challenge to skip them entirely, but lessening your drive-thru trips might help improve your skin!

The Anti-Acne Diet: Foods That Will Help You Get Healthy Skin

Now that we've discussed the foods to avoid, here's a list of items you can add to your daily diet for better skin.

Fish

Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation. Add salmon or tuna to your meals or you can try oral supplements.

Probiotics

Probiotics calm down inflammation, which again is important when you're dealing with acne. You can get probiotics from fermented foods or oral supplements.

Green tea

Green tea is loaded with powerful antioxidants that help keep your immune system strong. When you've got a strong immune system, a clear and healthy complexion will follow suit.

Turmeric

Another anti-inflammatory, turmeric is a popular ingredient for anti-acne face masks. As part of your daily diet, there are not enough studies to prove its efficacy in treating acne.

Vitamins A, D, E, and zinc

We collectively call these the "glow from within" vitamins and minerals set because these all work together to keep all organs, including your skin, in optimal shape.
