Iza Calzado Will Be Playing 'The First Darna' In ABS-CBN's Upcoming TV Series

Iza Calzado is super excited for her newest television role: Darna!

The actress was revealed to be playing "the first Darna" and Narda's mother in ABS-CBN's upcoming adaptation, Mars Ravelo's Darna: The TV Series. Based on the comics, the first Darna passes on her superpowers to Narda. Narda will be portrayed by Jane De Leon.

"Finally, I can claim to be part of the Pinoy superhero history! I almost had the chance in the past, but God had other plans. I was not meant to be that Darna but He surely prepared me to play this Darna. Everything always happens in His perfect time."

Iza was originally considered to play the iconic superhero in the 2005 GMA-7 Darna series, but the role was given to Angel Locsin.

This isn't the first time that Iza will be cast as a character with superpowers. She also played Amihan in GMA-7's fantasy series Encantadia, also in 2005.

In July 2019, Jane was announced as the new Darna for Star Cinema's superhero reboot. Filming for the movie began in early 2020. However, ABS-CBN postponed the film indefinitely in August 2020 "after careful deliberation on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the movie production and cinemas."

Mars Ravelo's Darna: The TV Series is set to start filming in September.
