Former BIGBANG Member Seungri Is Sentenced To Three Years In Prison

BIGBANG's former member Seungri has been sentenced to three years in prison.

On August 12, Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung Hyun, was found guilty on nine charges: violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, violation of the Food Sanitation Act, embezzlement, violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, habitual gambling, violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, prostitution mediation, purchase of prostitution services, and special violence instigation.

Apart from three years' jail time, Seungri also needs to pay a fine of 1,156,900,000 won or $995,221. 

In February 2019, the South Korean police started an investigation following the media's claims that Seungri was offering escort services to foreign investors. In March 2019, Seungri announced his retirement following the termination of his contract with YG Entertainment. He was with BIGBANG since 2006.

"At this point, I think it would be best if I retire from the entertainment industry," Seungri wrote in his announcement. "I decided on retiring from the entertainment industry as the issues that I caused a societal disturbance with are too major. Regarding the issues that are being investigated, I will be investigated diligently and reveal all the suspicions."

Seungri, who was due to end his military service in mid-September 2021, will be discharged in light of the prison sentence.
