We often see predictable plots in K-dramas: There's the poor-girl-meets-chaebol's-son, the childhood friends who became lovers, and so much more. Don't get us wrong—these series are truly enjoyable but sometimes, we want to watch something new. Like...a cat who can transform into a human being. Or characters living in prison. Maybe a girl who can *see* scents? Korean series don't fall short in giving us unique themes from time to time, so we rounded them up for you! Check out our list below.
K-Dramas With The Most Interesting Plots
1. The Girl Who Sees Scents (2015)
Who's in it: Shin Se Kyung, Park Yoochun, Namgoong Min

What would you do if you suddenly wake up with an unusual ability? In The Girl Who Sees Scents, a girl named Choi Eun Seol (Shin Se Kyung) was in a coma for six months after an accident. When she regained consciousness, she discovered that her left eye has turned green and she can now see scents. Because of this, she's able to trace a person through their lingering odor. Later in the show, she meets Choi Moo Gak (Park Yoochun), a detective who lost his sense of smell and taste. plus he can't feel any pain. This drama is quirky and fun, but you'll be surprised by its mystery and murder side story (a serial killer who leaves barcodes on the skin of his victims, anyone?).

2. Save Me (2017)

Probably one of the scariest K-dramas there is, Save Me's title is enough to catch your attention and its plot will send shivers down your spine. It also feels like you've seen a real-life story similar to it somewhere! The drama focuses on a church that is actually a religious cult, and beneath its peaceful exterior lies the most horrifying secrets and tragedies. Seo Ye Ji stars as Im Sang Mi, who moved to the cult's location and got involved in the group. She tries to call for help from her former classmates and they try their best to rescue her.

3. Extraordinary You (2019)

We've heard of webtoon-turned-series, but have you heard of a drama where the characters are aware that they live inside a webtoon? Extraordinary You may remind you of your fave nakakakilig high school drama but what makes it ~extraordinary~ is the female lead because she's just a supporting character in the story! Despite knowing the *truth,* she's still determined to become the star of her own life. Extraordinary You is stitched with fantasy and romance, and it won't be long until the word "Haru-ya" will keep playing in your head, LOL.

4. Meow, The Secret Boy (2019)

Cats are adorable animals but some people are just not born to be feline lovers. Take for example Sol Ah, a graphic designer who has a love and hate relationship with these furry creatures. One day, she took home an ordinary-looking cat named Hong Jo but here's the sitch: There's nothing ordinary about him because he can change into a human being! Hong Jo develops feelings for Sol Ah and he always wants to be with her, without letting her know about his real identity. Meow, The Secret Boy is a refreshing tale from a cat's perspective and will make you want to own a pet, too!

5. Pinocchio (2014)
Who’s in it: Park Shin Hye, Lee Jong Suk

Journalism takes the spotlight in Pinocchio and shows the lives of those working in the media. Park Shin Hye plays Choi In Ha, an aspiring reporter with a goal to reveal the truth all the time. She suffers from Pinocchio Syndrome wherein every time she lies, she breaks into hiccups. A fitting condition for a reporter, 'no? Opposite In Ha is Choi Dal Po, portrayed by Lee Jong Suk, and he's a genius who later pursued the same field as her. Yes, they fell in love but the thing is...they're from rival TV stations. The drama is a good story if you want to learn about news reporting, and the OST is LSS-inducing, too!

6. My Love From The Star (2013)

Here's a *super* funny K-drama that will leave you wheezing in each episode! My Love From The Star tells the story of Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun), a hundred-year-old alien (who looks like a normal human being, btw). He got stuck on earth and so he must ~tranform~ into a different person every now and then to keep people from having suspicions about his identity. One day, he becomes neighbors with a famous actress named Cheon Song Yi (Jun Ji Hyun) and his life turns even more unexpected as he gets involved with her (and her crazy antics).

7. Move To Heaven (2021)
Who’s in it: Lee Je Hoon, Tang Joon Sang, Hong Seung Hee

It's a bit unusual for K-dramas to tackle death and Netflix's Move To Heaven shows just that in a comforting way. This tearjerker is based on the essay of a first-generation trauma cleaner and his experiences and every episode tells a different story—including someone who died alone and another who was brutally killed. Lee Je Hoon and Tang Joon Sang portray Cho Sang Gu and Han Geu Ru, who manage a trauma cleaning business called "Move To Heaven." Instead of just clearing out the belongings of those who passed away, the two make it a point to make each death a peaceful one by connecting to the deceased's families.

8. Extracurricular (2020)

Netflix is really home to some of the most interesting shows in K-dramaland and one of them is Extracurricular. You may have adored Kim Dong Hee in Itaewon Class but in this series, you'll see him in a different light as a struggling student named Jisoo. His only goal is to finish his studies but since he doesn't have enough means to do so, he turns to illegal acts and becomes *SPOILER ALERT* a pimp. Have we a seen a similar plot like Extracurricular? Nope. Is it worth your time? YES.

9. Sky Castle (2018)
Who's in it: Yum Jung Ah, Lee Tae Ran, Yoon Se Ah, Oh Na Ra, Kim Seo Hyung

Before A World Of Married Couple became the highest-rating K-drama of all time, Sky Castle had everyone's eyes glued to the screen. It became a hot topic in South Korea, mainly because the storyline shows the educational system in their country. They take studying to the next level, to the point where it involves their mental health. The goal is to be admitted to the top three universities in SoKor, and the families of the students are willing to pull strings and sacrifice everything just to achieve that.

10. Prison Playbook (2017)

Prison Playbook is the underrated gem we can never stop talking about simply because of its plot. Reading from the title, you'll already know it's about those behind bars but there's more to it than meets the eye. The K-drama is a gripping and realistic tale about a baseball superstar who ended up in jail, and the many prisoners he got involved with. There's a hilarious repeat drug offender, a captain who can kill you with his eyes, and a convict who stabbed him to death...but eventually becomes his ally. There's nothing cliché with this show and the ending threw us a curveball we never expected.
