Hear Me Out: Having A Capsule Wardrobe Will Help You Save Time And Money

I have to admit: I was guilty of being overly excited when I went to the mall or when I saw the word SALE. I always had the urge that I need to shop because everything was at a discount price. My other excuse: "My job requires me to dress up every day."

I ended up with a credit card debt that was more than my monthly paycheck. I also had to deal with a broken cabinet rack because it couldn't take the weight of the clothes I purchased. I bought new storage—aka additional cost.

So, I realized I might be facing a problem. I wasn't even wearing 80 percent of the new clothes. (Ask my officemates and they would tell that they always see me in a blazer, bodysuit, and wide-leg jeans.) As for the trendy stuff, well, they have yet to see the light of day (or get IG exposure). I'm not a minimalist, and I have accepted I could never be one. I knew I couldn't part with the items I bought with my hard-earned money, however, I could make things simple: I could practice the "less is more" approach by having a capsule wardrobe.

If you can relate to my style and spending decisions, learn everything about owning a capsule wardrobe below.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a closet edit of the staples or items you *really* love to wear. You can occasionally add a new piece to the collection, but it is best that you work with stuff you already own. The recommended number is 37, including accessories like bags and shoes. (LIST: 15 Classic Fashion Items Every Girl Should Have In Her Closet)

Why should I even try embracing a capsule wardrobe?

  • Getting ready will be a super easy and quick process.

When you are working with an edited closet, you'll get dressed up faster in the morning because the decision-making process is easy: Your eyes see fewer items and your brain isn't pressured to mix and match a whole cabinet full of clothes.

  • You'll be a wiser shopper.

Another big win? You'll learn to shop less because you're mindful of your purchases. There is a "shopping ban" when you work with a capsule wardrobe—you can only buy new items when the season has changed. In our case, we have summer, rainy, and cold 'Ber months to work with. (The rainy and cold season can actually be counted as one.) Plus, when you're working with clothes you really love, you'll be more contented. It would be rare for you to say, "I have nothing to wear."

  • You'll exercise your style creativity!

Believe me, 37 items are enough to help you create cute outfits! This process will help you rediscover your true personal style, too. You'll learn how to mix and match tops, bottoms, and accessories. (READ: The *Super Easy* Guide To Finding Your Personal Style)

To sum it up, having a capsule wardrobe will help you lead a simpler lifestyle. Just like minimalists, you can live a well-curated life in terms of dressing up.

How do I create a capsule wardrobe?

  1. Pick 37 pieces of clothing, accessories, shoes, and bags that you'll work with for the next three months. I recommend picking a particular color palette so mixing and matching would be easy.

  2. Wear only these items! If you must use something that's included in the list, switch with a piece in your current capsule wardrobe.
  3. Don't shop until you'll enter a new season.
  4. Plan your next capsule wardrobe during the last week of the third month.
  5. It's okay to shop before the next season but remember to mindful with every purchase. Ask yourself each item's cost-per-wear: Will its price and closet space be worth the money? Will you be able to mix and match it with the clothes you already own?
