WATCH: How This Pinay *Thrift Flips* Clothes Into Pretty Korean-Inspired Outfits
Have you ever seen people alter their clothes on their own to make them fit better or create a completely different piece of clothing? ICYDK, there's a term for that process and it's called a thrift flip. It's a great way to upgrade your wardrobe without spending as much money! Pinay YouTuber Ashley Garcia even posted a video on her channel showing how she transformed her old clothes into brand new, trendy pieces.
And it seems like other Pinays have been doing it, too! For online ukay reseller Kim Rinolo, she's been refashioning or ~thrift flipping~ old clothes since 2010. When the pandemic happened (with pretty much everyone transitioning into a work-from-home setup), she shared that her thrift shop struggled because most of the items on-hand were formal and business outfits. At the same time, some of her customers also lost their jobs.
As a solution, she came up with an idea to transform the thrift clothes she had and make it cuter, sexier, and newer. According to Kim, "That time, pumasok talaga sa isip ko na i-refashion yung mga naiwang stocks na meron ako, [yung mga] 'di ko talaga nabenta." Check out some of her work below.

Kim mentioned that she usually sketches her designs on the spot. The first step is to draw the design on the fabric. She then makes the necessary cuts, assembles the pieces of fabric, and starts to sew. It takes her about five to seven hours to alter her thrifted finds.

Most of Kim's thrifted clothes are inspired by her love for Korean style. She said that every time she watches K-dramas, she gets amazed at how the sense of style is "cute and unique." Her pieces cost between P150 to P700 depending on the design.
"Instead na itapon na lang [yung damit], puwede mo pang pagkakitaan. Puwede mo pa siyang gawing bago. Also, nakakatulong din tayo sa ating Mother Earth," Kim added. She advised that having talent in the field of design isn't really necessary, because it's something that you can learn. "Kailangan mo lang maging resourceful and everything will go smoothly."
