I Got Out Of Bed At 4:30 A.M. Just To Try This Viral Onion Hack

At 4:00 a.m., my alarm jolted me out of REM sleep because I forgot to turn it off the night before. After mentally scanning my to-do list, I decided I didn't need to be in a rush because my day's looking pretty chill. Unfortunately for me, I have this really bad habit of reaching for my phone as soon as I wake up; so of course, I come across this viral TikTok about cutting onions without tearing up.

And while this isn't information I need to know before the sun rises, it was enough to convince me to pull my blanket back and get out of bed.

See, I have a thing for onions. That sounds weird, lol, but it's accurate. I enjoy eating it with anything—sandwiches, salads, chips, sometimes even on its own—so I tend to tear up several times a week as I slice an onion before my meals.

Viral TikTok: How to cut onions without crying

According to TikTok user @cerealeatingghost, the reason for this reaction is that acid in onions is naturally attracted to the nearest water source, which just so happens to be our tear ducts. The solution, therefore, is to add a different source into the equation: "All you have to do is get a damp paper towel, fold it up, keep it on your cutting board, and that acid will be drawn to the wet paper towel and not your tear ducts."

I strolled into the kitchen, said hello to my dad, and picked up an onion. I held a paper towel under the faucet, folded it, and placed it right next to the cutting board. I felt the urge to turn my head slightly but soon realized that I didn't need to. BECAUSE IT WORKED. I WAS THRILLED, you guys.

So apart from that much appreciated life hack, I now also know that I am so dedicated to the truth (and to onions) that I am willing to sacrifice sleep for a TikTok video.
