The Top Home Decor Trends In 2020, According To Interior Designers

In the beginning of the year, with the start of a new decade, everyone had big plans for 2020. A career shift, a trip you've been saving up for, a wedding you've been dreaming about—basically, your plans didn't involve spending a majority of the year at home. But when the global health crisis, there was no other choice.

To cope, many turned to making the best of a bad situation: by giving their space a makeover. People became more aware of their personal spaces. According to Tanaw Studio, a local interior design team, there were two practical trends during the pandemic: decluttering and decorating. Personally, I was big on decluttering; I got rid of everything I didn't think I needed to make my condo feel more me.

"There's something very empowering and also soothing in creating a space that we identify and feel very comfortable in. Most of our clients who are renovating [ask] for additional storage areas and solutions because they want a cleaner, more peaceful-looking space. We're also seeing a lot of people getting into decorating or simply just updating their rooms," the interior designers told Cosmopolitan Philippines in an email interview.

Unsurprisingly, two of the biggest home decor trends to come out of 2020 are plants and mirrors. Because we weren't able to travel, having indoor plants is an easy way to bring a little bit of nature to your home; and a mirror is a great way to make a small space seem bigger than it really is.

Tanaw Studio noticed that people started leaning towards mid-century or '50s style decor: "This is usually characterized by iconic furniture pieces, incorporating natural elements like wood and faux leather and favoring handmade items. Mid-century also explores sleek lines with both organic and geometric forms, which is a stark contrast to the previous trend of minimalist and industrial feel that usually features mostly sharp, clean lines." They're talking about those curved or half-moon mirrors we all secretly have, haha!

This style is neither minimalist or maximalist; it's cohesive and homey. Tanaw Studio added, "It's all about curating and adding a few but well chosen pieces. We love this style because it allows us to create nooks for our clients and we love making those spaces very personal and cozy."

Design trends for 2021

Though we'll still see a lot of mid-century style elements carry over to the new year, Tanaw Studio expects to see "touches of art deco, which is characterized by its boldness and symmetrical details."

"It features metallic finishes, like chrome and gold, and touches of gorgeous jewel tones mixed with neutrals. Mixing art deco pieces will add a pop of color and a splash of quirkiness to the usual laid back mid-century feel," they explained. Mirrors will continue to be a popular choice for a lot of people because it makes a good accent piece in any room, just with a different look: "[Think] back-lighted mirrors, tinted mirrors, or mirrors with metallic detail."

If you're looking to simply change specific parts or make small changes in your room, Tanaw Studio has a service called Design Clinic. You can book a one-hour virtual consultation if you just have a DIY project in mind and not a full-scale renovation.
