Lav Diaz wagi ng Brian Award sa Venice Film Festival para sa ‘Makikiraan Po’

MAY bagong international recognition ang batikang Pinoy filmmaker na si Lav Diaz!

Nakuha kasi ni Lav ang Brian Award para sa kanyang pelikulang “Makikiraan Po (Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors)” sa 83rd Venice International Film Festival sa Italy.

Sa panayam niya sa INQUIRER.NET USA, nachika ni Lav kung paano niya nalaman na napili ang kanyang pelikula para sa naturang pagkilala.

“It was a big surprise when the most radical group at the Lido reached out yesterday to tell Hazel Orencio, our line producer, that after their revolutionary lenses had checked all the works at the fest, they’re giving the gig to us, the Monty Python-inspired and big-dirty finger award Premio Brian (Brian Award), to our simple Filipino-prayer of a home movie, ‘Makikiraan Po (Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors),” sey niya.

“They said, ‘Thank you’ to the film that’s ‘continuing the greater cultural revolution.’ So today, before the sun rises in the Eastern skies of Venice, over a cup of coffee by the steps of a desolate hotel called Mabapa, a little ceremony – it’s more of a ritual – shall be conducted,” dagdag pa niya.

Kung curious kayo kung anong klaseng parangal ang naiuwi ni Lav, ang Brian Award o Premio Brian ay isa sa mga side awards na ipinagkakaloob sa Venice International Film Festival.

Ayon sa UAAR website, ibinibigay ito sa pelikulang itinuturing na pinakamahusay sa pagtataguyod ng secular na pananaw sa mundo at pagpapakita ng mga pagpapahalagang gaya ng rationality, scientific thought, democracy, pluralism, self-determination, freedom of conscience, expression, at research.

At hindi rin biro ang mga naunang pangalan at pelikulang nakasungkit nito.

Kabilang sa mga dating Brian Award recipients sina Paolo Sorrentino para sa “La Grazia” noong 2025, Pedro Almodóvar para sa “The Room Next Door” noong 2024, Guy Nattiv at Zar Amir Ebrahimi para sa “Tatami” noong 2023, Tom McCarthy para sa “Spotlight” noong 2015, Stephen Frears para sa “Philomena” noong 2013 at George Clooney para sa “The Ides of March” noong 2011.

Kung tutuusin, hindi na first time ni Lav na umani ng malaking karangalan sa Venice.

Noong 2016, pinangunahan niya ang tagumpay ng “The Woman Who Left” matapos nitong maiuwi ang Golden Lion for Best Film.

Pinagbidahan noon ang pelikula nina Charo Santos, John Lloyd Cruz, at Michael De Mesa.

Kaya naman ang bagong Brian Award ay panibagong feather in the cap para sa direktor na kilala sa mga pelikulang hindi takot sumabak sa mabibigat at sensitibong paksa.

Hindi rin basta-basta ang kuwentong dala ng “Makikiraan Po.”

Umiikot ang pelikula sa forced labor sa pagtatayo ng mga simbahan sa Pilipinas noong panahon ng kolonyalismo.

“Forgetful Filipinos must learn, must know, must understand, that these structures were built by forced labor, and that they didn’t appear in their midst by some cosmic manifestations — it’s blood, sweat, tears, and deaths of our ancestors,” kwento ng direktor sa isang interview.

Aniya pa, “Religion is one of the worst forms of violence,” he added. “Faith can be a form of eternal subjugation, especially for the weak. Oftentimes, it blurs all of rationality; it becomes the truth of existence.”

Kabilang sa mga bumubuo sa pelikula sina Bart Guingona, Ronnie Lazaro, Christian Bables, Isabel Sandoval, Yul Servo, Bong Cabrera, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, at Amado Arjay Babon.

Produced ito ni Montgomery Blencowe, asawa ng Kapamilya actress na si Lovi Poe, na nagsisilbi rin bilang isa sa executive producers ng pelikula kasama si Bianca Balbuena.

Nagkaroon ng world premiere ang “Makikiraan Po (Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors”) bilang bahagi ng 83rd Venice Film Festival Official Selection Out of Competition.
