"Harana," a song popularized by Parokya Ni Edgar, is definitely one of those OPM hits we all know the lyrics to—but have you ever wondered where the song really came from? In an episode of Jing Castaneda's online show Pamilya Talk, original songwriter Eric "Yappy" Yaptangco talked about the song's origin and it's seriously touching!
Eric wrote "Harana" while he was in college at the Ateneo de Manila University. At that time, he had helped found a student political party called Hudyat, and his co-members all loved music. Eric said that after they helped one friend set up a harana for the girl he liked, it soon became a "tradition" for them, and that's what led him to write the song.
Eric shares: "Ang tradition noon, yung kaibigan naming lalaki dadalhin yung magiging girlfriend niya o kung sino man yung pagtatapatan niya, tapos uupo sila. Tapos may signal. 'Pag nag-signal na, papasok na yung barkada, yung naka-porma, naka-barong! And then we would sing...Pagkatapos, may solo yung lalaki, yung magtatapat. Miski hindi marunong kumanta, basta kailangan susubukan. Kasi kailangan galing sa puso, minski hindi perfect yung pagkakanta."
"One evening, sinulat ko lang yung mga nangyayari. Yung naka-porma at naka-barong, yung naka-maong, yung nasisintunado sa kaba. Although minsan hindi naman dahil sa kaba, tagalang sintunado lang talaga pero kakanta pa rin. And then yung malamig yung hangin, yung maganda yung sitwasyon. 'Yon, nilagay ko lang yung lyrics and then I wrote the song," shares Eric. He wrote it on a Sunday afternoon in January 1989 and was finished with the song in two hours! "There was no specific trigger. I did not write it for a girl...I was really drawing from the experiences of the barkada." Awww!
They would sing it during events and the song was soon *passed down* to other generations of students. According to Chito Miranda, when the song reached Parokya Ni Edgar and they recorded it, it was the "wrong" version. During the interview, it was also revealed that there was an "original third stanza" of the song.
