Podcasts On Facebook? Yeah, It's Happening *Soon*

You may have noticed that more and more companies are getting people to talk and listen more than type: There's Calamansi, a type of social media based on voice for Pinoys, and of course, Clubhouse. And it looks like Facebook is about to follow suit.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Casey Newton on the Sidechannel Discord server that they are planning to invest in audio features: "We think that audio is of course also going to be a first-class medium, and there are all these different products to be built across this whole spectrum."

In a blog post, Facebook said that they've noticed an increase in audio calls and audio messages on WhatsApp and Messenger. Right now, they are building a "set of new audio creation tools" and investing in audio tech like speech-to-text and voice morphing. Moreover, "you will be able to use music from Facebook's Sound Collection in the background of your story to set the tone. And with the ability to mix audio tracks, a growing collection of sound effects, voice effects and filters, it should be a lot of fun too."

Users will also be able to create Soundbites or "short-form, creative audio clips for capturing anecdotes, jokes, moments of inspiration, poems, and more." Through an Audio Creator Fund, they are planning on working with emerging content creators to test the product before they make it available to everyone.

Facebook isn't stopping at short-form audio, however. According to the blog post, "More than 170 million people are already connected to hundreds of thousands of podcast pages on Facebook, and more than 35 million people are members of fan groups around podcasts—but until now, you had to leave the Facebook app to listen to these episodes." The platform is looking to help podcast creators reach and connect to new listeners within the app.

There's also a new feature called Live Audio Rooms, which should be available to Facebook users soon. This will start in Groups, "making it available to the 1.8 billion people using Groups every month and the tens of millions of active communities on Facebook." Public figures will also be able to access Live Audio Rooms "so they can host conversations with other public figures, experts and fans."
