Who here has done some *extreme* things in the name of love? I bet all—if not, most—of us have. And Bela Padilla, acclaimed actress and screenwriter, is just like us na marupok sa pag-ibig.
The most extreme thing Bela has done for love:
In an episode of the Third World Cinema Club podcast, Bela and her longtime collaborator Direk Irene Villamor talked about all things love, including how far they've gone for love. Bela divulged that the most extreme thing she's done was to wait outside a guy's house for FIVE HOURS because she wanted to fix things with him. Don't worry, though, 'cause she doesn't remember much about it being ~inebriated~ and all, LOL.
"May isang time—grabe, nakakahiya sasabihin ko na 'to, wow!—nung hindi na okay tapos gusto ko ayusin, gusto ko makipag-usap kaya lang nahihiya ako so uminom muna ako," Bela shared. "Tapos naghintay ako sa labas ng bahay niya ng five hours. Pero okay lang. Hindi ko naman alam eh kasi lasing ako. The next day ko na na-realize na, 'Grabe, 9 p.m. ka umupo doon.'"
How her long-distance relationship with BF Norman Ben Bay works:
Well, it looks like these ~dramatic~ moments are all in the past because she's happily content in her long-distance relationship with her Swiss-Italian bf Norman Ben Bay. "LDR ako ngayon, medyo matagal na rin parang mag-iisang taon na. Okay naman," she said. Bela described how their dates go (over FaceTime) and said that they're quite the "boring couple"—and that perfectly works out for them: "Naka-ano lang kami, naka-FaceTime, na ako sumasagot ng crossword tapos siya nagtatrabaho sa work from home siya ngayon. So ganoon lang, para rin kayong hindi LDR kasi parang you do things together. Parang ganoon lang yung routine namin. Pero very boring couple kasi kami so masaya na kami sa ganoon. Hindi naghahanap ng excitement ganoon. Kaya siguro nagwo-work yung LDR namin."
How Bela and Norman went from friends to lovers:
It's known to most that Bela and Norman met in 2017 when she filmed Meet Me In St. Gallen in Switzerland, where Norman is from! She further shared that they never lost touch after meeting and were hesitant to get into a romantic relationship because of the hassles of an LDR. But when the pandemic hit, they used it to their advantage, and just went with their feels!
"Nagkakilala kami nung nagsho-shoot kami ni Direk Irene ng Meet Me In St. Gallen sa Switzerland. So taga-doon siya. Ilang years na yung Meet Me In St. Gallen, magfo-four years this year. Tapos friends kami nang four years, tapos parang one year pa lang kami ngayon. Initially hindi naming tinry siguro kasi nga parang ang layo, tapos ang gastos kung magkikita kami palagi, and mas possible kasi na ako yung lumilipad papunta doon so nakakapagod isipin. Parang noong una hindi binigyan ng chance, pero since nag-pandemic parang it evened out everyone's situations so parang napag-isipan na pwedeng i-try this year. Kasi never naman kami nawalan ng communication throughout the four years."
Bela has met with Norman on several occasions in the past year: She flew to Turkey and other parts of the Mediterranean and Europe in October 2020 and February 2021! Looks like these two really are making their LDR work, cute!
