Korean dramas are arguably one of the most popular genres for television shows. But did you know that some of your favorite titles are actually spin-offs of foreign series? Yup, you read that right!
We rounded up eight popular K-dramas that are remakes from international titles:
1. Boys Over Flowers (2009)

The series that kickstarted our love for K-dramas, Boys Over Flowers is inspired by the Japanese manga, Hana Yori Dango. The first country to adapt the Japanese comic book into a series is Taiwan, which brought us the iconic Meteor Garden. Following the success of the Taiwanese version, Japan produced its own spin-off with the same title as the manga. In 2009, South Korea dropped their version titled Boys Over Flowers!

2. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016)
Who’s in it: IU, Lee Joon Gi, Kang Ha Neul, Nam Joo Hyuk, Ji Soo, Kang Han Na, EXO's Baekhyun
Where you can watch it: Viu
We still miss you, Prince Wang So! This 2016 hit drama is based on the Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin which translates to Starling By Each Step. Before Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was released, China released their own version of the drama titled Scarlet Heart in 2011.

3. A Love So Beautiful (2020)
Who’s in it: Kim Yo Han, So Joo Yeon, Yeo Ho Hyun, Jo Hye Joo
Where you can watch it: Netflix
A Love So Beautiful is based on the Chinese novel To Our Pure Little Beauty. Before South Korea tackled the story and adapted it into a drama, China released its own version in 2017. For most fans, A Love So Beautiful serves as the gateway to the world of C-dramas!

4. Rich Man (2018)
Who’s in it: EXO's Suho, Ha Yeon Soo
EXO-Ls, we know you're familiar with this drama! Starring EXO’s Suho, Rich Man premiered in 2018 as a remake of Japan’s 2012 drama, Rich Man, Poor Woman. This drama is a hidden gem for those who are into romantic comedies, so if you haven’t watched it yet, give it chance!

5. Criminal Minds (2017)
Who’s in it: Lee Joon Gi, Son Hyun Joo, Moon Chae Won, Yoo Sun

Everyone, including their eommas (moms), has most likely seen an episode of the American TV show, Criminal Minds. But did you know that South Korea has its own version that aired in 2017? Unlike its American counterpart, South Korea’s Criminal Minds only lasted for one season, whereas the original had a whopping 15!

6. Suits (2018)
Who’s in it: Jang Dong Gun, Park Hyung Sik
Where you can watch it: Netflix and Viu
Another K-drama that is based on an American title is Suits. The series premiered in 2018 and spanned 16 seasons. Similar to Criminal Minds, the South Korean variation only lasted for a season, while its American counterpart has nine seasons and was broadcasted for eight years!

7. A World Of Married Couple (2020)
Who’s in it: Kim Hee Ae, Park Hae Joon, Han So Hee
Where you can watch it: Netflix and Viu
The stressful 2020 K-drama that left everyone both in rage and tears! A World Of Married Couple is actually based on the British series titled Doctor Foster, which premiered in 2017. The original version consists of two seasons. The K-drama, up to this day, remains to be the highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history! On the other hand, a Filipino remake has been recently confirmed by ABS-CBN.

8. Mr. Queen (2020)
Who’s in it: Shin Hye Sun, Kim Jung Hyun, Cha Chung Hwa, Na In Woo
Where you can watch it: Viu
This popular historical rom-com is actually based on the 2015 Chinese web drama, Go Princess Go. Both series became popular in their respective countries but not without getting caught in controversies. South Korea’s version had an issue over historical distortion, while China’s was considered controversial due to its inclusion of themes such as bisexuality and gender identity.
