72 Quezon City Residents Test Positive For COVID-19 After Attending A Wedding Reception

A wedding reception in Quezon City became a superspreader event after 72 guests tested positive for COVID-19. In a report by ABS-CBN News, the Quezon City local government filed a case against Don Brabante, the homeowner's association president from Brgy. Old Balara who allegedly gave permission for the wedding reception to take place last May 15, 2021.

"Nagsampa tayo ng kaso sa kanya. Ayon doon sa interview ng mga contact tracer, siya po ang nagbigay ng permiso na magsagawa ng kasal at inuman. Sa tingin ko accountable siya," said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte in an interview with Teleradyo on Monday, June 7.

According to reports, the LGU also filed a case against the newlywed couple for violating Republic Act 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Concern Act. The COVID-19 spread may have started after the couple's driver attended a drinking session in Cavite on May 9 where one of the attendees tested positive for the virus. "Then from inuman to May 15 kasalan, mayroon dun na driver, nag-drive sa bride na hindi niya alam na infected pala siya. So nahawa yung bride,” explains Brgy. Old Balara Chairman Allan Franza. The Chairman was also asked to address a show cause order filed by the local government.

Out of the 255 residents swabbed for COVID-19 in Area 7, Old Balara, where the event took place, 72 tested positive, reported the Quezon City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU). The area has been placed on lockdown until June 9.

"Most of our patients are currently admitted in different HOPE facilities while there are others isolated in their homes. Among those who are put under home quarantine are five minors, one pregnant adult, and one senior citizen," said CESU Chief Dr. Rolando Cruz.

"We've noticed that incidents like this one are increasing. The spread could've been prevented but we see that some people, including persons in authority, have started to become lax in the enforcement and practice of minimum health protocols," said Mayor Belmonte in a statement. "This should serve as a wake-up call for everyone to remain vigilant and wary of COVID-19. The virus is still very much in our environment and we are counting on everyone's cooperation," she added.

Last May 31, the Department of the Interior and Local Government released a memorandum prohibiting superspreader events including:

• Drinking parties
• Cockfighting activities
• Fiesta
• Parades
• Beauty contests
• Processions and other religious events
• Cultural festivals
• Pool parties and other water recreational activities
