WATCH: How To Get Undone Waves, The Hairstyle Celebrities Love

For many years now, celebrities have always turned to messy waves as their go-to hairstyle. This 'do is a bit tricky to do by yourself. It calls for a different technique as compared to classic, voluminous waves. If you want to learn the basics, check out the easy-to-follow tutorials we found!

Heatless waves

Ever since we saw this hairstyle on Heart Evangelista and Bela Padilla, we couldn’t stop thinking about it! Upon close examination, it looks like the waves can be achieved through unraveling braided hair.

Parmida Kiani’s tutorial perfectly nails this ‘do. Here’s how the beauty guru did it:

  1. She applied a leave-in conditioner and hair oil on damp hair and let her locks air-dry.

  2. Then, she parted her hair in the middle. She grabbed a small section in front, got another section from underneath, and wrapped that over the chunk of front strands. This is a two-strand French braid—aka its uncomplicated sister.

  3. From the first section that you grabbed, add some more hair, and braid it over.

  4. Repeat the steps. Just keep adding more hair with every braid as you move down.

  5. When you’ve got the rest of the hair near the nape, continue rope braiding. Repeat the steps on the other side.  (Tip: Finishing with a regular braid at this point creates more defined waves.)

  6. Put the two braids up so you can tie them together for it to appear like this.

  7. Sleep on it and reveal soft waves the next day. Set it with texturizing spray for extra hold. Massage hair oil for extra shine.

  8. And you’re done!

It's also model and style icon Alexa Chung's signature look. Pro hairstylist George Northwood gives us the lowdown on Alexa’s envy-worthy hairstyle.

  1. Apply heat protectant all over the hair. Then start with an inch-section right above your ear.

  2. George reminds us to always curl away from the face. Hold the curling iron horizontally and wrap the section around the rod.

  3. He tells us to leave the root and end out for a more undone look.

  4. After releasing the curl, pull it straight afterward. “We want a wave, not a curl,” George declares. He also said that it’s okay to curl random sections of the hair when you’re doing this by yourself. Repeat the steps until you’re with the rest of your hair.
