The couple's relationship seems to have gone south shortly after Max's somewhat (!!!) thirst tweets about several other celebrities (including Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande) were dusted off by fans—and after several weeks of "conflicts," ultimately Demi realized Max wasn't being "genuine" with her.

"It was very hurtful to Demi when she realized that Max's intentions weren't genuine," a source tells People. ″Breaking off the engagement was not an easy decision."

The source also says that Demi thought Max was ″trying to further his career by using her name behind her back,″ and that ″it was hard for [her] to admit she made a mistake when it came to Max."
