Pia and Jp
Who was into hair coloring first?
Pia: Me. I've always been into hair dyeing ever since I was a college student.
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
P: Our first time was when we were college students. I really wanted for us to have a "couple thing" since we weren't the type of couple that was into very corny couple stuff. That time, I had to retouch my brown hair, and I instantly knew that it was the perfect opportunity for us to do that. It was a sudden decision of mine and I'm really glad that he was down to do it. No persuasion was needed at all. For the following years, I continued the hair dyeing journey alone.
Then, the work-from-home set-up came. I believe it's been four to five years since we had our hair dyed together. We both knew that now is the best time for us to experiment. I've become my BF's personal hairdresser. I cut his hair and do all the work when dyeing his hair. He's lazy though, so I can't have him do my hair all the time!
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
P: For me, it was when I had my red hair and he had his blue hair. I think it represented how we are polar opposites of each other.
Jp: I think that our current hair color (teal) is our best one. “Ito na ‘yung pinaka-'Papi' and 'Mami' state natin so far,” I told Pia.
P: We don't have future plans as I just choose what color I want for myself or for us on a whim. Usually, though, it’s whatever I or we haven't tried yet.
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
P: Our go-to bleach is Hybrid Colours Dntkllmyvb. For hair dye, we love Huemiere and Hybrid Colours.
Aliana Shane and Justine Angelo
Who was into hair coloring first?
Justine: My girlfriend wanted to play with some colors on her hair. But since she’s a med tech student, dyes were not allowed for her course. During this pandemic, she joined the Facebook group, Colored Hair Community Philippines (CHCP) and she really enjoyed seeing a lot of girls in the group with different hair colors. I actually love her natural look and hair color but since she wanted to try something different, I supported her. We bought the materials we needed and I bleached her hair thrice at one-week intervals. We used treatment to moisturize her hair and after that, I colored her hair with purple-ish blue dye and she really loved it.
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
Aliana: Since high school, I wanted to try different hair colors already, especially the pastel shades. When I joined CHCP, I felt so inspired and motivated to try DIY. I read a lot of guides in the group and bought everything I needed. Since it was hard to color my hair alone, I decided to seek help from my boyfriend. At first, he didn't like the color since my strands were yellowish (untoned blonde) and dry. But after I used a purple shampoo and toner, he was so amazed and after a week he decided that he also wanted to color his hair and dye it red. I bleached him thrice with one-week intervals, too, and used a treatment to lessen the damage.
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
A: Ash blonde. I feel like a Korean superstar with that color and it suits my morena skin tone! Hahaha! I'm planning to dye my hair pastel pink very soon since I'm such a kikay.
J: Red hair! We both love watching K-dramas and K-pop idols, and I’m a fan of G-Dragon, that's why I wanted to color my hair red. My next plan is gray because of another K-pop superstar!
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
A: We use Fusion bleach powder and 9% developer. It's affordable and easy to use. It's also not so itchy or tingly on the scalp and it has a good lift on our hair. We used Cellowax direct dye for the red hair (undiluted Cyclamen shade) and Bremod hair dye to achieve the ash blonde hair. Both are not drying; our hair was soft after rinsing.
Trixie and Rham
Who was into hair coloring first?
Trixie: I was into coloring first—I have been dyeing my hair since high school. I used to buy those P20 dyes then color it back to black because the school won't permit us to have different colors. I have been itching to do loud colors like my favorite hue (purple) since 2014. But every time I plan to do so, I get pregnant. Finally, I had the chance to do it in 2020 during the pandemic.
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
T: We haven’t really done matching hair colors. My husband actually has a type of skin problem (he was told by a dermatologist before that he might have Vitiligo), so some parts of his face and hair turn white. One time, as I was coloring, he was curious if bleached hair would be okay on him, so we can ~cover~ the white parts of his hair caused by that skin problem. That's when I tried bleaching his hair and coloring it ash gray.
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
T: My favorite color is purple but I think the best color I've had would be my emerald green or teal hair. It was inspired by that famous hair blogger, Stella Cini. As for my husband, he colored his hair only once before, and he's not the liberated kind when it comes to that. He liked the gray one, though. The hue fits him well and covers the white parts of his hair.
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
T: My all-time favorite is Arctic Fox, a foreign brand. It has a very nice smell and is not damaging to the hair. As for the bleach, anything that our hairdresser puts on my hair is okay, so I don't really have a go-to per se. At the end of the day, it's the proper after-care that will make your hair still look lively after all the bleaching, coloring, and styling.
Isabella and Mark
Who was into hair coloring first?
Isabella: Me! When lockdown happened, there was nothing better to do at that time and I thought why don’t we try that green crepe paper method? And for me, at the time, it was the bomb! I thought it was sooo cool. I felt really empowered, and freakin’ loved it! And that was the time I discovered CHCP, too, and from there, my “sisiw life“ began.
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
I: That’s me again! He was not a fan at first. Maybe because the crepe paper method was not too appealing for him. But as I kept changing colors from green, pink, and red, he finally gave in. He said, “Idol ko si Joker, eh!” So then we tried the ~legendary~ green crepe paper method, haha! It was a struggle at first, TBH. His hair was quite short when I started bleaching it and it came to the point that I kept burning his scalp from that hot water with that crepe paper soaked on it but he loved every second of it!
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
Mark: It’s the violet shade of Cellowax.
I: It’s the Harlequin shade of Cellowax. But as a couple: IT’S THE VIOLET! Future hair color? Maybe amber? Red? Not sure yet, but maybe we’ll try split dye; we never tried that before.
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
I: Our go-to bleach is the Bremod bleaching powder and oxidizer together with the famous Purple Keratin by Melanchelly 'cause it reacts on the hair really fast. And for dyes, it’s the one and only Cellowax by Merrysun. It’s really affordable, it has vibrant colors to choose from, and most importantly, it’s available on Shopee!
Marione and JM
Who was into hair coloring first?
Marione: JM was into hair coloring first. He dyed his hair pink before, but he kept it long and black when the pandemic started. I was influenced by my sister who is also a sisiw.
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
M: We don't plan our colors together, but the colors always end up looking like each other. I think it's fate that our dyes just complement each other, the way we do as a couple.
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
M: Our favorite color was red. We really felt confident and we loved the way people look at us because when we're together. We looked like two balls of fire, haha!
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
M: Our favorite bleach brand is Fusion and we use Cellowax for our hair dyes.
Gian and Justine
Who was into hair coloring first?
Gian: Me. I started coloring my hair back in 2016 at a salon and he accompanied me and witnessed my first-ever hair transformation!
Who persuaded who when it came to ~coordinating~ hair colors?
G: Me again, hahaha! I had to persuade him so many times on the spot when I had my white and blue hair. He had his natural hair grown out with some orangey ends that I knew could be colored red (which was also his fave color). I kept telling him that it's gonna look so good on him! He finally said yes and after coloring it, I was right. It looked so good on him that I had to take pics of us ‘cause we looked like elemental opposites: Fire + Ice! Photoshoot, ganon! Ayun, ang shweet lang.
What was the best hair color you guys have done? What else do you want to try in the future?
G: The Fire + Ice one, I really loved that and I would love to do more coordinated hair colors with him. But he's taking a break from bleach at the moment. If ever he decides to get bleached again, I'm thinking the halves of the rainbow! Like, I could do the warm colors this time and he'll do the cool colors, baliktad naman. Eng shweet telege, chos!
What are your go-to bleach and dye brands?
G: For bleach, it's either Hybrid Colours for that quick and painless lift or if I want something a bit stronger, Colourette's Bleach Cloud! For colors, I use A LOOOT of brands, but my go-to's are Hybrid Colours, Huemiere, Lunar Tides, and Manic Panic!
