Yup, 2021 is a huge year for Ruru Madrid 'cause he's slated to star in GMA-7's biggest action-adventure series, Lolong. Starring alongside new leading lady Shaira Diaz, Ruru has been undergoing physical training for months now.
So, to get us hyped up about the Kapuso network's most-anticipated project, here are some fast facts to know about Ruru Madrid!
1. Ruru Madrid was born on December 4, 1997!
The 23-year-old actor's real name is actually Jose Ezekiel Madrid. Here's a throwback to his birthday post last year when he wished everyone for a better 2021.
2. He started out in the talent reality show Protégé.
Ruru was part of the second season Protégé in 2012 and placed as a runner-up in the competition.
3. He's in a ~special~ relationship with Bianca Umali.
Ruru and fellow GMA artist Bianca Umali have been rumored to be dating since 2018 but only started posting photos with each other in 2020. The two still are super low-key in talking about each other to the press and haven't publicly put a label on their relationship. In a November 2020 interview, Ruru said, "Masasabi ko yung relationship naming dalawa, isang bagay na espesyal sa akin."
4. He's part of the INC.
Ruru is a proud member of the Christian Church, Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), and has spoken about his devotion on several occasions throughout the years. Aware of his "pilyo" image, Ruru shared things people might not know about him being an INC member: "Honestly, hindi alam ng mga tao na twice a week ako nagsisimba. Na active ako sa church ko, like, pumupunta ako sa iba't ibang activities or sa iba't ibang events sa church ko. Siguro, 'yon ang mga hindi alam ng mga tao tungkol sa akin, kasi alam nila, pilyo ako. Alam nila maloko ako."
INC members have to abide by a strict set of doctrines, one of which is abstaining from alcohol. In a cute Insta of him and Bianca drinking Butterbeer, Ruru placed a disclaimer saying the beverage was non-alcoholic.
5. He used to be in a love team with Gabbi Garcia!
Ruru and Kapuso actress Gabbi Garcia were in a four-year-strong love team called GabRu. They amicably parted ways in 2018 to further explore their rising careers. GabRu were in the GMA shows My Destiny, Let The Love Begin, Encantadia, and Sherlock Jr.
6. Ruru is an award-winning actor!
Ruru's most recent awards were from the PMPC Star Awards For TV! In 2017, he won Best Drama Actor for Encantadia, and in 2018, he bagged Best Single Performance By An Actor for an episode of Magpakailanman.
7. He has a younger sister in showbiz!
Ruru's younger sister Athena goes by the name Rere and is 20 years old! Here's a sweet snap of Rere and her Kuya Ruru during her debut in 2019:
8. His mentor is the late director Maryo J. delos Reyes.
One of Ruru's earliest works was the 2013 film Bamboo Flowers which was directed by Maryo J. delos Reyes. The veteran director became an integral part of Ruru's life as a mentor and manager but he sadly passed away in January 2018. When Ruru received his PMPC Star Award in 2018, he said in an interview that he was saddened by Maryo's absence during his special night.
9. He helped out in relief operations for Typhoon Ulysses.
Typhoon Ulysses was one of the most vicious natural calamities to hit the Philippines in 2020. It caused flooding in many areas in Luzon, including Ruru's hometown Marikina. On Instagram, Ruru shared that he visited his old neighborhood and revealed that he actually experienced a similar catastrophe when he lived there as a child, 2009's Typhoon Ondoy.
10. He's a fanboy himself!
Ruru is proud to be part of the BTS ARMY and has posted about his love for the global superstars on several occasions. When he shared this mirror selfie of him styled like BTS' V, it went viral on K-pop Twitter and was even noticed by V himself!
11. Ruru loves the outdoors!
