There Is Reportedly An Arrest Warrant For Miss Grand Myanmar Han Lay For Speaking Up Against Military Coup

Miss Grand Myanmar Han Lay, who took the stage during the Miss Grand International coronation night to talk about her countrymen's fight for democracy, reportedly has a warrant of arrest from the Myanmar military. According to Philstar.com, this isn't *confirmed* yet but Thai and Burmese pageant pages are saying that Myanmar "allegedly issued an arrest warrant for Miss Grand Myanmar Han Lay, including people who sent her to Thailand." BBC reports that Myanmar has already issued arrest warrants for 18 celebrities and journalists who spoke up against the coup.

During her speech in March, 22-year-old Han Lay talked about the deaths in her country and pleaded for international aid, saying: "The people from Myanmar, they are working on the streets for democracy. I am also the one who is rooting for democracy on the stage right now...I want to say for here that, please help Myanmar. We need your urgent international help right now."

After her speech, Han Lay received both supportive and threatening comments on social media and her friends in Myanmar told her not to come back home, fearing for her safety. Han Lay is currently staying in Thailand under the Miss Grand International Organization's care

Right after an election, Myanmar's military, also known as the Tatmadaw, seized control of the country in February 2021 and declared "a yearlong state of emergency." Myanmar citizens took to the streets to fight for democracy, and thousands have been arrested and hundreds have reportedly been killed. Prior to flying to Thailand for the Miss Grand International pageant, Han Lay was protesting on the streets of Myanmar along with her schoolmates from the University of Yangon. Many of her fellow students have already been jailed, and one of her friends was even killed, according to Han Lay.
